SEASON 2 // EPISODE 56
Description
Raising the roof on our sailboat restoration project
Embarking on our sailboat restoration journey, a pivotal chapter unfolds as we meticulously craft a new deckhead and headliner to adorn the ceiling of our once-abandoned vessel. This revitalizing process breathes a new life into our sailboat, infusing it with renewed purpose and beauty. Recognizing the critical nature of this task, especially considering the superstructure's elevated position above the center of gravity, we sought the expertise of a professional to ensure optimal balance and performance.
The decision to raise the superstructure came after the revelation that the original was beyond salvage, marred by rust-riddled holes. Seizing the opportunity for improvement, we elevated the height to accommodate Luke, standing at a lofty 6'2". This thoughtful adjustment not only enhanced comfort in the main cabin but also posed challenges of increased weight and a higher placement relative to the center of gravity. To counterbalance, we opted for 3mm steel plates instead of the initial 4mm.
Now, as we introduce the wooden structure into the mix, the same considerations apply to prevent the boat from becoming top-heavy. Our seasoned professional played a crucial role, skillfully crafting a structure that not only fulfilled our design vision but also efficiently reduced bulk weight.
The framing of all the windows marks a visual triumph, transforming the once-exposed hull into a seamless, aesthetically pleasing interior. As we celebrate this achievement, we find ourselves crossing the halfway mark of the interior build, a testament to resilience and dedication in restoring our sailboat to its former glory.
